Understanding Low Text-to-HTML Ratio in SEO

When an SEO tool flags a low text-to-HTML ratio, it usually means your page contains too much code compared to the amount of written content. In simple terms, there aren’t enough words on the page relative to the HTML structure powering your website.

While this sounds technical, the issue is often less about code and more about low word count.

Why Word Count Matters More

In most cases, a low text-to-HTML ratio warning is triggered because a page has too few words—often fewer than 200. For pages meant to rank in search engines, this can limit visibility and performance.

If the page is informational or targeting keywords, aim for:

  • At least 200 words as a minimum

  • 350+ words for stronger ranking potential

However, not every page needs a high word count. Contact pages, image galleries, and similar utility pages naturally contain fewer words, and that’s perfectly normal.

Identifying Pages That Actually Need Fixing

When reviewing flagged URLs, check whether:

  • The page is meant to rank and provide information.

  • It’s an old or forgotten page that was accidentally indexed.

  • It’s a WordPress-generated page with little or no content.

If a page has no real purpose, consider deleting it and regenerating your sitemap in your SEO tool. This often resolves the issue quickly.
