PODCAST EPISODE 192
How to Spot Bad SEO Advice About AI
A specific type of SEO advice keeps showing up in podcast pitches, directory profiles, and consultant outreach messages. The claim is that traditional SEO is dead, and that new terms like AEO and GEO have replaced it. This claim is false, and Google has specifically warned business owners to watch for it.
What Are AEO and GEO, and Are They Replacing SEO?
AEO and GEO are terms some SEO consultants use to describe optimizing for AI search results, and they are being marketed as a replacement for traditional SEO. A review of several dozen SEO consultant profiles on a podcast guest directory found that the overwhelming majority used the phrase "SEO is dead" and positioned AEO or GEO as the new standard.
Only one consultant out of roughly three dozen profiles pushed back on this claim. Everyone else repeated some version of the same message, which suggests it has become a common sales tactic rather than an accurate description of how AI search actually works.
What Does Google Actually Say About AEO and GEO?
Google has published guidance on how to get a website into AI-powered search results, including Gemini, and one of the first points in that guidance addresses this exact claim directly. Google identifies statements like "SEO is dead" as a warning sign when evaluating a third-party SEO consultant.
Google's own AI search tools rely on the same foundational search infrastructure as traditional search. Other AI models access Google's search data through an API, similar to how a browser extension would, but Google's own AI tools have more direct access to the search engine itself.
What Should You Actually Change for AI Search?
You build on the SEO work you already have rather than starting over with a new framework. The adjustments needed for AI search are smaller than many of the shifts SEO has gone through in the past, such as the move to mobile-first indexing or the introduction of Core Web Vitals.
The specific change that matters most is structuring content more clearly, not rewriting it to sound different for AI. Clear structure helps AI models cite your content accurately, which is the same outcome clear structure has always produced for traditional search rankings.

What Question Should You Ask Before Hiring an SEO Consultant?
Ask a prospective SEO consultant directly whether AI search represents the death of SEO. A consultant who answers yes is repeating a sales tactic rather than an accurate assessment of how AI search actually functions.
A consultant who instead explains specifically how search behavior has changed, without declaring SEO obsolete, is giving a more reliable answer. That distinction is a practical way to screen out advice built on manufactured urgency rather than substance.
Warning Signs When Evaluating an SEO Consultant
- Claims that "SEO is dead" or has been fully replaced
- Heavy reliance on the terms AEO or GEO as a new category
- No specific explanation of what has actually changed in search behavior
- Framing AI search as requiring an entirely new strategy rather than a continuation of existing SEO work
