PODCAST EPISODE 203
Photo Credits Without Links: How They Help SEO
Photographers who supply images to local businesses often run into the same wall. The business is happy to give a photo credit, but they won't link it back to the photographer's website. For years, the standard SEO advice was to push for the link because unlinked mentions were assumed to carry very little weight. That assumption no longer holds up.
Is an unlinked photo credit still worth anything for SEO?
Yes. A leaked portion of Google's algorithm revealed that unlinked mentions carry meaningfully more SEO value than most SEOs had assumed. The mention is not quite as valuable as a link, but it is a lot closer than the industry believed for years.
This matters directly for photographers. If a business will credit your work but won't link to your website, that credit still counts. You do not need to lose the opportunity just because a link is off the table.

Why did links become so important for SEO in the first place?
Google built much of its early advantage on links. Links became one of the clearest signals Google could use to determine which pages and businesses were trustworthy and relevant, and that reliance shaped SEO strategy for years.
Because of this, photographers were regularly advised to trade photography for a linked credit whenever possible. That advice was not wrong. It was simply based on incomplete information about how much unlinked mentions were worth.
Why is AI search changing the value of mentions?
AI tools are not able to browse a website the way a person can. They cannot click through menus, follow every internal link, or explore a site the way a human visitor would.
- AI can follow links through Google's own index using API access
- AI can draw on large pre-trained sources such as major directories and databases
- AI can only visit a specific webpage directly if it is given that exact URL
Outside of those paths, AI does not reliably follow links across a website. This limitation makes mentions more important, because AI is far better at recognizing that a business or person was mentioned than at tracing every link connected to them.

What does "authentic" mean when it comes to mentions?
Google distinguishes between authentic and inauthentic mentions. An authentic mention comes from a source that has a real, logical connection to the subject, whether through geography, subject matter, or both.
A mention from a business with no real overlap in subject or location carries little weight. A mention from a business that shares your geography, your subject matter, or both carries significantly more.

What should photographers do to make sure a mention counts?
The mention needs to name the business accurately and specifically. A vague reference to a first name is not enough, especially since many photographers share a business name built around their own name plus the word "photography."
- Make sure the full business name is used, not just a first name
- Look for mentions from businesses with a real connection to your subject or location
- Do not treat a missing link as a reason to walk away from a mention opportunity
A specific, accurate mention gives both Google and AI search tools a clear signal about who did the work, even without a clickable link attached.
